Pergola or patio?
Pergolas can be freestanding and their designs can be square, rectangular, hexagonal, octagonal or even circular.
Most of the pergolas we’ve built, however, are attached to the home and are often built over a deck area. They may be open on all sides or there may be a screen on one side for privacy or decoration.
So when it’s attached to the house, what makes it a pergola, not a patio? A pergola generally relates more to the outside yard area and is often the focus of the garden design. This is why it’s a good idea to build a pergola before relandscaping your back yard, or designing it at the same time so it’s integrated into the layout.
A simple, easy design process
Buildwyse director Scott Wellings is very experienced at designing and building pergolas with his small team of professional carpenters. Starting the design process is as simple as showing Scott some images of your desired pergola style, for example from magazines or online, along with a starting budget. He will sketch up a basic plan and explain its construction thoroughly so that together you arrive at the best pergola you can afford.
Timber pergolas
Because it provides the most design flexibility and cost-effectiveness, a typical pergola is constructed in timber. Depending on the design this may be pre-primed treated pine or hardwood. The usual pergola is a skillion design, the simplest of roofs with a low pitch. To keep things light and airy, deeper pergola roofs can be entirely or partly standard polycarbonates like Laserlite or Suntuf, or even glass if desired.
One of our clients wanted a curved roof, so we made this of twinwall corflute supported by curved metal beams. Another client wanted to match his Victorian-era home, so the steeply pitched roof was topped with turned wooden finials. The Balinese-inspired pergola is also a popular trend.
